Mentoring & Resources for Diverse

 NF PB Creators

There's a glaring lack of diversity among nonfiction picture book (NF PB) creators that we want to see changed.

To do our part in this change, we decided to offer free mentoring sessions from NF PB pros to up-and-coming diverse NF PB creators (authors, author/illustrators, and illustrators). We hope this will open doors, build connections, and provide craft-improving resources for these creators.

There are some great programs available to mentor and open door for diverse kidlit creators, with a few selected mentees each year (We Need Diverse Books, Lee & Low Publishers, The Highlights Foundation). We wanted to add a new mentoring program to the mix, to provide additional opportunities:

  • mentor session availability for numerous mentees each year (to give as many diverse creators as possible a chance to receive at least some direct mentoring)

  • a focus specifically on nonfiction picture books (one of the kidlit areas most in need of creators with diverse identities)

How the #DiverseKidsNF Mentoring Program Works

Here's the scoop:

  • Diverse nonfiction kidlit creators (pre-published or early in their published kidlit careers) can apply at any time for a mentor session. (This includes BIPOC, LGBTQ+, creators with disabilities, and creators from minority religions. We know there are other underrepresented identities as well; if you have one not listed, please let us know in your application.)

  • Twice a year, we will match several applicants with volunteer mentors (published NF PB creators, NF PB editors and/or agents) for a one-time mentoring session of their choice (an NF PB manuscript or dummy feedback session or a kidlit business chat).

The number of mentees chosen will depend on the number of applicants and mentors we receive; we'll do our best to match as many as possible! The dates of our announcements will also depend on how many applicants and mentors we get. We're starting out flexible to see what works best and will adjust as needed to best serve.

We seek out our volunteer mentors from among the creators of our #DiverseKidsNF books, their editors and agents, as well as other published nonfiction picture book creators and professionals who share our goal of expanding creator diversity in the nonfiction picture book space.

Apply Any Time

If you'd like to apply as a mentee for a mentor session, please fill out the form below.

If you're a published nonfiction picture book creator, or NF PB editor or agent, and would like to volunteer as a mentor (for one or more sessions, your choice), please contact us! Thank you so much!
